39% of Americans spend more time socializing online than in person. Focusing just on social media can hurt your career and your social skills in the real world.
An article in TIMEMoneyland quotes Sherry Turkle, a professor at MIT, as saying “we have sacrificed conversation for mere connection”. She says this results in more connections but shallower relationships.
If you are trying to land your first job or internship, don’t make the mistake of just looking down at your device. Get out of your social media bubble and meet people….in person. Face to face meetings are the key to getting a job in today’s tough job market. Networking online is important but there is no substitute for the human connection.
The article also states that if you spend 99% of your time in front of a screen instead of socializing in person, your communication skills will become weaker and weaker.
