Business Etiquette: Should You Tip on Pre or Post Tax?
A few weeks ago, CBS Philadelphia (Channel 3 News) called to ask about tipping. They have a segment that airs called “Good Question”. Nicole Brewer is the newscaster and she answers questions from viewers.
You can view the segment by clicking on the video below. The interview provides many answers to your questions about tipping (how much, delivery, bartender, etc.).
Guidelines on Tipping
1.
Should you tip pre or post tax? You can tip before tax but really this is getting down to just change or a few dollars in most cases.
Technology is playing a role now in how we tip. Have you seen IPads at locations when ordering at the counter? It calculates the total for you and gives you options as to how much you want to tip (by %). This service has increased tips for those working behind the counter.
2.
What if you did not receive good service? You can adjust accordingly. Consider speaking with the manager about your experience before posting a negative review on social media.
3.
How much to tip? Consider tipping 15-20%. 20% is a good idea, especially if you received good service.
4.
What if you have a coupon or a discount? If you are using a coupon, tip on the original amount of your bill (before the discount).
5.
How much should I tip the bartender? For beer and wine, 15-20% of the your bill. Don’t forget to pay your bar tab before you leave!
6.
How much do I tip the other staff members at a restaurant?
Valet: $5 minimum
Coat check: $2 per coat
Restroom attendant: If you use their products, $1-2
