There is not a greater opportunity for a college student to absorb how a business works that being an intern. Here are a few tips for those who want to get started on the internship track:
- Pick up the phone and make a human connection. Yes, that’s right. Stand out from the crowd and make cold calls.
- Tap into your network. Call your friends and family. Make a list of the companies you would like to work for during the summer.
- Take immediate action when you get a lead.
- Prepare for the interview. Read and research everything you can about the company and the person who is interviewing you.
- Dress the part when you go for the interview. In most cases, you will need to wear a business suit.
- During the interview, look for what you may have in common with the person who is interviewing you. Do they have photos with golf courses, fishing trips, etc.?
- Ask about the company culture and what a typical day might look like for an intern at this company.
- Follow-up immediately by email and then again with a handwritten note. Remember, look for ways to stand out from the crowd. For more details about appropriate follow-up click here.
- When you get the job, be available to start immediately.
- After every internship is completed, ask for a letter of recommendation.
- Work hard, enjoy and learn as much as possible.
