Business etiquette and getting back to work at the office. Where shall we begin? Many of you are in the awkward in-between….either in the office or not. Whether to shake hands or not? Ask if someone is vaccinated or not?
Our business lives have changed. There is a new code of business etiquette in the workplace.
This new code does not need to be complicated or even awkward.
Many times we can use our common sense or our emotional intelligence to figure things out.
I am here to help you reframe and rethink about conducting business in our new environment whether you are choosing to be in the office – or not or a hybrid situation.
The New Business Etiquette at Work
Create Your Own Good Fortune:
Now more than ever is the perfect time to set an intention to create your own good fortune. Revisit your strengths. How can you use them to benefit your projects? How can you use them to help others?
Keep in mind that many companies and individuals thrived during this time. They were able to shift their mindset and continue to add value and recognize the needs of their markets and current environments.
Flexibility:
Meet co-workers and clients where they are. If you sense that a client or co-worker is still not comfortable meeting in-person then continue with calls and virtual meetings. Find a way to make the meetings creative. Lean into their needs and make them comfortable wherever and however they want to communicate.
Mentoring:
Consider that co-workers, especially new hires or interns may need a little “extra” time. How can you help them? Can you be a mentor or assign one?
This simple act can make a very big difference as we all settle into our new workplace.
Don’t Change If It’s Working:
You still care about your clients and co-workers. Still be transparent. Continue to “be human” in other words – be likeable. Offer feedback when needed. And, remain committed to the health and well-being of your team.
If you are leading your team during these times, do not change your leadership style if it is working. Be consistent because the fundamentals that you have created are working. Keep moving forward.
Business etiquette is much more than where your fork belongs.

About Lisa Richey and The American Academy of Etiquette
I bet you know first hand the issues many companies are facing in the workplace.
The lack of conversation skills, maybe an employee doesn’t understand they have a certain reputation and need guidance to tweak or change it, or employees are not following the dress code.
You may have a strong desire for your staff to be likeable or you want them to connect with the many generations in the workplace.
HR professionals and sales organizations contact me to speak on topics such as personal branding, how to build stronger relationships with clients and colleagues, ways to connect the generations and of course, how to dine with ease and grace during a business meal.
If you are interested in learning more about a business etiquette training session for your team, I invite you to have a conversation.
