Calm confidence is the ability to communicate with clarity, composure, and authority without force or performance. It is not about being the loudest or most dominant person in the room — it is about being the most anchored. Calm confidence is characterized by intentional pausing, steady eye contact, and grounded body language that signals ease and authority. Unlike aggressive or performative confidence, calm confidence builds trust through presence rather than volume, making it one of the most powerful professional skills anyone can develop.

What Is Calm Confidence? How to Speak With Presence (Without the Noise)

Calm confidence is the elegant balance of clarity, composure, and conviction. It’s not about being the loudest in the room.

It’s about being the most anchored. You aren’t performing—you’re present. You speak with purpose, listen fully, and choose your words with intention.

Steady: You pause, breathe, and respond—rather than react.

Clear: Your message is simple, strong, and easy to follow.

Grounded: Your tone and body language signal ease and authority.

Why Calm Confidence Elevates Your Presence

In today’s fast, often noisy workplace, composure cuts through. People lean into leaders who project grace under pressure. Calm confidence does three things immediately:

Builds Trust: Your steadiness helps others feel safe and seen.

Amplifies Clarity: Clear structure and pacing make your message memorable.

Signals Authority: Poise reads as readiness—clients and teams follow it.

3 Powerful Ways to Practice Calm Confidence Today

1) Pause Before You Speak

Take a one-beat pause before answering. That micro-moment telegraphs thoughtfulness and gives your mind time to choose precise, powerful language.

2) Breathe With Intention

Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four, exhale for six. Two cycles before a meeting resets your nervous system and softens your tone.

3) Anchor With Eye Contact

Use relaxed, steady eye contact for one complete sentence before shifting to the next person. It feels natural and reads as confidence—not stare, not scan.

Micro-Moments You Can Use Today

In Meetings: Lead with your headline, then offer two crisp points.

On Zoom: Shoulders down, chin parallel, camera at eye level.

In Email: One clear ask. One deadline. One call to action.

When Challenged: “That’s a helpful point—here’s what I’m seeing…”

For Trainers & Speakers: Turning Calm Into Authority

If you teach or aspire to teach business etiquette, calm confidence is your signature. Your presence is the proof of concept. When you model composure, your audience mirrors it—and your content lands with far greater impact.

Ready to elevate your professional presence and lead with elegant authority?

Discover the Business Etiquette Speaker Certification

Common Myths—Gently Debunked

Myth: Confidence means being extroverted.
Truth: It means being direct, clear, and composed—for every personality.

Myth: Calm looks passive.
Truth: Calm is decisive without being dramatic.

Myth: You need the perfect words.
Truth: Presence carries the message; simple language wins.

Try This 5-Minute Reset

Ground: Plant both feet. Unclench your jaw. Drop your shoulders.

Breathe: 2 slow inhales (4 counts) / exhales (6 counts).

Frame: State your headline: “The core point is…”

Deliver: Share two supporting points. Stop. Invite a question.

Elegant. Efficient. Effective.

Final Thought

Calm confidence isn’t a personality type—it’s a practice. With intention, anyone can cultivate it and lead with refined presence.

Frequently Asked Questions about Calm Confidence

Q: What is the difference between calm confidence and arrogance?

Calm confidence is rooted in composure and clarity — it invites others in rather than shutting them out. Arrogance relies on dominance and self-promotion, while calm confidence leads through presence, listening, and intentional communication. The key difference is it elevates everyone in the room, not only the speaker.

Q: Can introverts have calm confidence?

Yes — calm confidence is actually a natural strength for introverts. It does not require being outgoing, loud, or the center of attention. Introverts often excel at the core qualities of calm confidence: thoughtful pausing, deep listening, and precise word choice.

Q: How long does it take to develop calm confidence?

Small shifts can be felt immediately with intentional practice — such as pausing before speaking or using steady eye contact. Building this quality as a consistent presence typically takes 30 to 90 days of deliberate daily practice. Like any professional skill, the more you apply it in real situations, the more natural it becomes.

Q: What does calm confidence look like in the workplace?

In the workplace, it looks like a leader who speaks last but is heard most. It shows up as measured responses under pressure, clear and concise communication in meetings, and body language that signals ease and authority. It is the professional who never raises their voice but always commands the room.

Q: Is calm confidence a skill or a personality trait?

This quality is a skill — not a fixed personality trait. Anyone can develop it regardless of their natural temperament, background, or communication style. With the right techniques and consistent practice, calm confidence becomes a reliable professional tool available to every person.

Executive Presence: Do You Have It?

Do you have a “presence” when you walk into a room?

As a certified business etiquette expert, this will be one of the most important skills for you to project as speaker as well as to deliver to an audience.

As a speaker, you need to have a presence. You also need to have the context and the content to offer this topic to your participants/audience.

Executive presence refers to the combination of qualities, behaviors, and attributes that convey a sense of leadership, confidence, and influence.

Someone with a “presence” automatically gets my attention. I become curious. I observe them.

Here is the good news, you can cultivate this -in some, this is innate -others have to be aware and set the intention to have a “presence”.

It goes beyond someone’s technical skills and competence and encompasses the ability to command respect, build credibility, and make a positive impact in professional settings.

Individuals with strong executive presence are often perceived as effective leaders and are more likely to inspire trust and confidence in others.

Key Elements of Executive Presence Include:

Confidence: Displaying self-assurance and a belief in one’s abilities without coming across as arrogant.

Communication Skills: Effectively conveying ideas, actively listening, and adapting communication style to different audiences.

Poise: Maintaining composure and grace under pressure, demonstrating resilience in challenging situations.

Authenticity: Being genuine and true to oneself, which contributes to building trust with others.

Credibility: Establishing a reputation for expertise, reliability, and integrity in one’s field.

Professional Image: Presenting oneself with a polished and professional appearance, both in terms of attire and demeanor.

Emotional Intelligence: Understanding and managing one’s own emotions and being attuned to the emotions of others.

Adaptability: Being flexible and able to navigate change, demonstrating agility in various situations.

Strategic Thinking: Having a clear understanding of the bigger picture and the ability to think strategically about business goals.

Gravitas: Projecting a sense of authority, seriousness, and substance that commands attention and respect.

Developing Executive Presence

Developing executive presence as a business etiquette speaker is often a continuous process that involves self-awareness, ongoing learning, and intentional efforts to enhance interpersonal and leadership skills.

It is a valuable asset for individuals and business etiquette speakers aspiring to leadership roles and is crucial in making a positive impact within an organization as well as with your audience.

Becoming a business etiquette speaker takes three things working together: the poise to command a room, the persistence to keep going after a client says no, and the courage to say the thing nobody else in the room will say. Twenty years of standing in front of Deloitte, Toyota, Siemens, and Pfizer has taught me that the etiquette itself is the easy part. Those three qualities determine whether you build a career or a hobby, not the etiquette itself.

Grace: What It Looks Like in the Room

A room reads composure before it reads anything you say. That is grace. I have walked into rooms of 400 participants and rooms of 12 executives, and the same rule holds every time: people watch how you carry a pause before they listen to what you say. Grace shows up in the handshake, the eye contact, the way you answer a hostile question without flinching. It is not softness. It is control.

Grit: What Happens When It Doesn’t Go the Way You Planned

Grit is keeping going. It is strength in front of your participants. It is knowing your message will land.

Gumption: Saying What Needs to Be Said

Companies hire business etiquette speakers to say the uncomfortable thing clearly and kindly.

What Grace, Grit, and Gumption Add Up To

None of this replaces a curriculum. You need a framework for what to teach, a structure for how to price it, and a plan for how to find your first client. I put together what I know about starting this business: what to charge, how to get your first client, and why the curriculum matters. It’s all in one guide.

Last week, I had the extraordinary opportunity to attend The Ritz-Carlton Leadership Summit in Dallas—an experience that left me both inspired and energized.

This event has been on my radar for so many reasons, but one stands out above the rest: The Ritz-Carlton is the gold standard in luxury hospitality.

Their reputation for exceptional service and meticulous attention to detail is unparalleled, and as a business etiquette expert, I couldn’t wait to soak in every lesson they had to offer.

The Power of Service Excellence

One statement from the opening session immediately resonated with me: “We are ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen.” This powerful philosophy has been the foundation of The Ritz-Carlton’s legendary service model. It’s not just a tagline—it’s a commitment to dignity, respect, and an elevated standard of excellence. The moment I heard it, I knew I was in the right place.

What does this mean for those who want to become certified business etiquette speakers? How can you align with these same values in your own businesses and with your clients?

Elevating Business Etiquette Training with a Luxury Mindset

Throughout the event, I found myself constantly reflecting on two things:

How can I implement these principles in my own business?

How can I help my clients do the same?

The answer became clear: Exceptional service is a mindset, not a skill set. It requires a commitment to professionalism, refinement, and an unwavering focus on the client experience.

This is what a business etiquette speaker offers.

It’s not just about teaching people which fork to use—it’s about cultivating a culture of excellence and respect that transforms interactions and builds lasting relationships.

Key Takeaways for Business Etiquette Professionals

Anticipation is Everything: The Ritz-Carlton doesn’t just react to client needs; they anticipate them. As etiquette professionals, we should guide our clients to do the same—whether it’s in business communication, client interactions, or corporate presentations.

Service is an Art: Luxury brands like The Ritz-Carlton understand that every detail matters. We, too, must approach etiquette training as an art, helping professionals polish their presence and refine their executive image.

Authenticity and Respect Are Non-Negotiable: True sophistication isn’t about being stiff or scripted—it’s about being genuinely gracious, confident, and poised. Our role as etiquette experts is to help individuals and teams embody this in a way that feels authentic.

If you’re considering a business etiquette certification, this is your opportunity to stand out as a leader in professional presence, communication, and service excellence. The lessons I learned from The Ritz-Carlton Leadership Summit reaffirmed that there is always a higher level of excellence to reach, and I’m more inspired than ever to help you and my clients get there.

The question is: Are you ready to elevate your business, your brand, and your level of service?

Generation Z has been a topic of interest for business etiquette speakers for a while – and something has really shifted. Now this generation is the MAIN topic.

After countless email requests and inquiries over the past two weeks, I decided it is time for an article and more details about Gen Z.

The workplace needs us (business etiquette speakers) to assist with their integration and onboarding for Generation Z. And here is why….

Generation Z Has Become a Main Topic for Certified Business Etiquette Speakers for Several Reasons in 2024:

Emergence into the Workforce: As Generation Z continues to enter the workforce in increasing numbers, businesses are recognizing the need to understand their preferences, communication styles, and workplace expectations. Business etiquette speakers are addressing how to effectively engage and interact with this generation in professional settings.

Digital Natives: Generation Z is the first truly digital-native generation, having grown up with technology at their fingertips. Business etiquette speakers are discussing the impact of technology on workplace communication, including email etiquette, virtual meetings, and social media professionalism.

Changing Workplace Dynamics: Generation Z brings a different set of values and priorities to the workplace compared to previous generations. They value diversity, authenticity, and work-life balance. Business etiquette speakers are exploring how to create inclusive and welcoming environments that resonate with Gen Z employees.

Adapting Traditional Etiquette: While traditional etiquette principles still apply, they may need to be adapted to align with the preferences of Generation Z. Business etiquette speakers are offering insights on modernizing etiquette practices to better suit the needs and expectations of this generation.

Brand Reputation and Customer Interaction: With Generation Z representing a significant consumer demographic, businesses are also interested in how to engage with them effectively as customers. Business etiquette speakers may address topics such as customer service etiquette, social media engagement, and brand authenticity.

Remote Work and Hybrid Models: The rise of remote work and hybrid work models has further emphasized the importance of understanding Generation Z’s communication preferences and etiquette in digital environments. Business etiquette speakers are providing guidance on navigating virtual collaboration and maintaining professionalism in remote settings.

Overall, Generation Z’s influence on workplace culture, consumer behavior, and communication norms makes it a compelling topic for certified business etiquette speakers who aim to help businesses adapt and thrive in an evolving landscape.

The January 2023 issue is at your local bookstore now. Have a cup of tea nearby, sit someplace lovely and take a special moment to be enchanted!

The experience was memorable and was a highlight of 2022.

Why – because of all the people I met and the journey of preparing for it

Photos from the shoot are included below.

But first, let’s talk about how to use this beautiful ritual to enhance our connections – personally and professionally.

If you have been following us, you know we are big believers in the art of human connection. This type of connection is what makes us thrive as humans and as business owners.

Without human connection, well, a business can be mundane and we are anything but mundane.

When I speak to corporations, the topic of building relationships at work is always at the forefront.

We often forget that we CAN be creative and different when making connections, fostering relationships, and networking.

Why not invite someone you just met at a networking event to tea?

Many of your local hotels offer this type of dining service.

Check:
The Ritz Carlton (international locations)

The Four Seasons ( same)

The Plaza in New York

The Umstead in North Carolina

The St. Regis (multiple locations)

The Rittenhouse (Philadelphia)

The Mansion in Turtle Creek (Dallas)

The Whitby Hotel (London and New York)

Neiman Marcus (certain locations)

Bergdorf Goodman (New York)

You can easily find afternoon tea offerings in your area through a Google Search. Many smaller boutique tearooms exist in certain cities.

By extending this type of invitation, you are setting yourself apart. Who wouldn’t be curious and jump at the chance to have afternoon tea?

I will share this with you – especially those of you who are interested in becoming certified and a business etiquette expert – my most popular articles are those that pertain to this type of experience- anything related to lifestyle or image.

Ten Teatime Etiquette Tips from Lisa Richey

In addition to the magazine article, on Victoria Magazine’s website, you will discover an online article where I am interviewed about the details of afternoon tea.

The online article is a fabulous resource to learn:

What are the differences among the various types of tea?

When I’m invited to afternoon tea, what should I wear?

As a hostess, how can I create a lovely environment for afternoon tea?

These are only a few of the questions that are answered in the article.

Being a polished woman takes intention and awareness.

Would like to up level your image? Today’s article has easy action steps you can do now to polish your style.

How to Be a Polished Woman

Walk into a room as if you know where you are going: Posture wins every time. It exudes confidence. Posture is the key to self-confidence, feeling strong and happy from the inside out.

Posture is a must of you want to feel and appear polished.

Habits and Self-Care: Our daily habits tell a great deal about ourselves. Write down your daily habits – the good ones and the habits that could use improving.

This exercise will also show what is important to you. Trust me, this will make a difference in what you deem as really important to you.

Your wallet: Does this one surprise you? Take a look at your wallet. Is it stuffed with receipts. An overstuffed wallet does not equal a polished woman.

This is an important part of your overall image and personal brand.

A good habit is to clean out your wallet and handbag everyday. Yes, that often. Throw the things that are not necessary.

A Calm Presence: This takes practice. And it is necessary for peace and our over all well-being. Meditation helps tremendously.

A Polished Dresser: Wow, this really deserves its own post. After two years of yoga and sweat pants, it is time for professionalism again. Some professionals need a reminder.

Yes, yoga pants are comfortable and leisure wear is everywhere but that doesn’t mean we have to align with it.

Be your own person. Notice how you feel on the inside when you wear yoga and sweat pants everyday.

Listening: There is a difference between hearing and listening. Being fully present is a gift. Today, listening takes intention.

Put down your phone/device and make eye contact. Where your eyes go so does your attention.

Business Etiquette: 2 Minutes to a More Interesting Conversation

Here is How You Can Help Others This Week:

Many struggle with conversation skills. Even though we are so “connected” these days….I am talking about social media, we are still so disconnected.

Do you want to be a better conversationalist?

Do you want to teach others how to be more comfortable socially or on Zoom?

You can.

If you want to become a business etiquette speaker, teacher or trainer, then this is a topic of interest for you.

Here is a TWO MINUTE Tip to Teach Others about Having a Better Conversation

Guide others by telling them to…

Ask open-ended questions. Forget the ones that only require a “yes”or “no” answer.

Deepen the conversation ask “why”; it is O.K. to ask about specifics. People like to talk about their latest vacation. For example, ask why they chose a particular location and why (or why not) they would do it all over again.

Talk to a co-worker. If they have attended a training session via Zoom and are talking about it with a co-worker, they can: Ask the co-worker what they learned. What was their biggest take away? What was their reaction?

As a business etiquette expert, you have so much value to offer. The world needs what you have to give.

This video toolkit is perfect for you if…

Open Office Etiquette

Business Etiquette: Culture is a company’s personality. This includes the way employees interact with each other, their attitudes and of course the way they communicate…whether by email, text or in-person.

Over the next decade, we will continue to see change due to demographics, talent pool and of course, our ever evolving technology.

Today, working in an open work environment…one with few walls, is becoming more prevalent.

How do you maintain common courtesies in such a space? How should your employees communicate in a way that fosters growth and builds relationships that will take your company forward and your team?

Finding employees and leaders with good communication skills can be a challenge.

Do not fall into this trap if you are a company that takes pride in your company’s culture. Do not fall into this trap if you are an employee.

Good communication skills are paramount now.

If you are a leader, know the importance of providing guidance to your team.

What Am I Hearing From HR and Corporate Leaders? What Requests Am I Receiving from the Frontlines?

Should you guide your employees to text across the desk to another team member if they have a question? What about sending an email? Is it a waste of time for the team member to get our their chair to over to another and ask the question….start an in-person dialogue?

How about headphones? Yes, this promotes a quieter work space but what is the cost of inhibiting a conversation between two individuals?

Tips for Working in an Open Office Environment

1. Honor the work space. This is a space to get things done, to meet deadlines and to create. Keep space between you and others that are concentrating. If you would like to have a conversation with a co-worker (in fact we encourage this), go to an area where you can easily converse without disrupting the team.

2. Take your personal calls outside the work area.

3. Stay out of someone’s bubble. Do not stand over someone as they are working. Always ask if this is a convenient time to have a conversation.

4. Use perfume/cologne sparingly in an open work area.

5. Take a break and step away from your desk during meal times. Your tuna on rye may sound good to you but not so much to a co-worker.

6. Keep your space neat and clean and follow your company’s guidelines on personal items.

7. Do not chew gum at your desk. The sound of this can be annoying to others.

8. Do not pound or over exaggerate the way you type on your computer.

9. If you are sick, work from home.

I bet you know first-hand the issues that many companies are facing in the workplace. The lack of conversation skills, maybe an employee doesn’t understand they have a certain reputation and need guidance to tweak and change it, or employees are not living up to the stated dress code. You may have a strong desire for your staff to be “likeable “or want them to connect with the many generations that are your vendors, employees and clients.

HR professionals and sales organizations, contact me to speak on topics such as personal branding, how to build stronger and better relationships with clients and colleagues, ways to connect the multi-generations that make up the workforce and of course how to dine with ease and grace during a business meal.

Many of my clients comment that my delivery is engaging, informative and makes an immediate difference within an organization.

From Portland, Oregon to the Middle East, I have delivered my popular programs to hospitals, financial firms, universities and management consulting companies. I have helped thousands of people to become more polished, professional and powerful.
